EI Africa joins global effort to end digital violence against women and girls
EI Africa and member organisations in the region join the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, taking place from 25 November to 10 December 2025. This year’s theme, “UNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls”, shines a spotlight on the urgent need to combat technology-facilitated abuse.
Gender-based violence continues to affect one in three women worldwide, and digital platforms are increasingly being used to harass, stalk, and intimidate women and girls including educators, activists, and union leaders. These attacks often cause lasting harm and trauma, particularly for those facing intersecting discrimination based on race, disability, or gender identity.
The 2025 campaign is especially significant as it marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a cornerstone in advancing women’s rights. It also aligns with new global initiatives such as the UN Cybercrime Convention and the Global Digital Compact, which set fresh standards for digital safety and accountability.
EI Africa calls on education unions to take action by:
- Raising awareness through events and workshops on digital violence;
- Promoting digital safety among members, staff, and students;
- Supporting survivors with access to services and resources;
- Advocating for stronger laws and policies in collaboration with governments;
- Engaging online using hashtags #NoExcuse, #ACTtoEndViolence, and #16Days;
- Wearing orange to symbolize hope and solidarity.
In line with ILO Convention 190, EI Africa emphasizes the need for inclusive workplace policies, training programs, and accessible remedies to prevent violence and harassment, including those occurring online.
Campaign materials including posters, guides, and digital safety resources are available in English, French, and Spanish. For more information, visit the official campaign website or contact EI Africa.
Together, we can create safe digital spaces for all women and girls. Violence is not inevitable it can and must be stopped.
